TERM 4 2017:

This term we really enjoyed Charlie and the Chocolate Factory day!! We couldn’t believe it when all the teachers were dressed up as characters from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.  We had great fun visiting all the different factory rooms and taking part in a variety of activities, including making potions and dancing like an Oompa Loompa!!

We have also had great fun learning all about rocks and soils.  We have learnt about the main three types of rock and even had a demonstration to observe how each type of rock is formed; we even went on a rock hunt to see how many different types of rock we could find.

Terms 1 and 2 2016/2017:

On Friday 11th November, Year 3 held an Art day based on our topic of Extreme Environments and our class text ‘Shackletons’ Journey’ by William Grill. We looked at a variety of illustrations from the text and discussed how we could use these as inspiration for our own ideas. The artist Hokusai created a woodblock print called ‘The Great Wave’ and we explored the shapes and techniques he used. By using these ideas we experimented with using different lines and shapes to design a wave picture to en-capture the feelings and atmosphere of Shackleton and his crew during their journey to Antarctica.

Using our ideas, we chose our favourite one and sketched it onto a block of wood, using the outline we used clay to mould our waves and created peaks to add texture and produce a 3D effect. Leaving this to dry, we then decided on the colours we would use to make it look realistic. Using a layered approach with acrylic paints and different brush sizes we painted our waves.

We had a fantastic, and MESSY, day using a range of materials and being creative. The finished products look fantastic and we will be displaying them in school for others to see. We are very proud of the finished result!

Year 3 Educational Visit to Knole House:

On Wednesday 6th July, Year 3 went to Knole House to experience life in Tudor times. We had a tour of the house, tried costumes on to look like different classes of people, a courtyard trail all about the building of Knole House and handled Tudor artefacts. When we were in the house we had to be very careful. We weren’t allowed to touch anything or take any photos as this could damage the items on display. In the gallery of the house we looked at a variety of portraits and the lady giving us the tour was very impressed with our knowledge of famous Tudor people from making our own Tudor portraits. Our favourite part of the visit was the dressing up because it made us feel like real Tudors and the fabric was very soft.

It was such a fun-filled and all of the children and adults had a great time!

We have learnt about lots of different aspects of Tudor life, including learning about Henry VIII and his six wives.  We are currently in the middle of a Tudor art project where we are using collage to create Tudor portraits.  We have to make sure we cut the pieces really small to create a realistic looking image

We have using all of our Tudor information to write Tudor stories in English about the theft of King Henry VIII’s crown and in maths we have been learning about fractions and shapes. We have used resources to help us create fractions and understand fractions as part of a whole.  We have also worked hard on adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator.
